Hello, I am looking for any information on my late Grandfather’s time in the R Signals.
His name was George West and he enlisted in the Royal Signals in October 1956 at Great Scotland Yard.
On his Certificate Of Service it says the Serial No is R.Signals / 5002
I know he went to E Africa twice (I think Kenya) and to the Arabian Peninsula (I think this was Bahrain).
Other than this, I have been told by my Grandmother that he wasn’t in a regiment and squadron and kind of helped out where needed.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. I would love to see some pics of him when he was younger that I could share with my family.
Many thanks.

H. E. Mott
R Signals
- it was in my aunt and uncle's house when they passed and it would be good to find any family members that this could be passed to.
There is a paper tag which says 1945

James Lawler: my brother went to school with your mother in Cyprus back in 1973. We last heard from Carol in the late 1970s when we lived in Ft. Meade, Maryland.
If possible, we would absolutely love to hear from her again. andsing49@gmail

Hello,
My dad was called William Howell Carrier. He was a Corporal and served in the Suez Crisis. I believe he was in 3LOC garrison Moascar camp. He enjoyed boxing and entered against other units. He did his square bashing at Catterick. I think he was in the signals from 1951-56. He was born in Prescot so probably sounded like a scouser.
Dad died in 2021 with dementia. The nursing Home/Hospital lost his veteran and service medals. I have his demob papers and a photo of him drinking with pals. I also have a Christmas day menu that his friends all signed.
I would really like to hear from people that might remember him or perhaps may know some old stories of him.
I remember him telling me that he made a side income by selling fuel to the Egyptians, and when he almost got caught with the empties he managed to blag it that he was rescuing stolen jerrycans. Another story was that he didn’t have a driving license but was driving different vehicles. His CO found out and signed a license for all classes of vehicles, yet he never had to pass a driving test.
Hopefully this may jog someone’s memory and they can tell me more about my dad during his army days.

I purchased a side cap in 1967 which has blue piping around the side edges.
Recently I saw a photograph of a signalman who was employed at Bletchley Park in WW2 wearing a side cap.
This cap had the old type cap badge on it but strangely had blue piping across the front edge of the raised area.
Any ideas why there were different designs or if the front blue piping signified anything special.?
Thank you.

Hi Bob - thanks for the message and great to hear you knew my grandad - thanks for the info. I’ve been able to piece together some of his movements - after Ripon, he went to Blandford Camp with 30 Signal Regiment in 1960/61. He then became an acting Warrant Officer Class II and was awarded the BEM for his role in training at Ripon - newspaper articles say this was for “kindness” and the way he treated recruits, so it’s good to hear you describe him as such! A year or two later, he went to Detmold then Bunde before leaving the army in 1968.

Hi All, I have asked before with no luck so I will try again. I am trying to locate an old friend of mine. His name is Nick Gibson, he served in 619/Bielefeld Signal Troop in 1967/8 (Please look at the photos under that troop and you will see an image of him). I last saw him in 1980, I think he was on his way to Hong Kong, he was married with two children then. If anyone has any info on him this would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

Dave,
I was a very newly-commissioned 20-year old 2/Lt when I met your Grandad, Ronald Hornby, as the Sqn Sgt Maj of 1 Sqn, 25 Signal Regt, in Ripon in November 1959. Despite his somewhat gruff exterior I discovered that he was a really nice guy and, together with Major Harry Rae, the Squadron OC, he managed to keep me on more or less the right path in my first few months in the Corps. When 25 Signal Regt was moved to Catterick in June(?) 1960 and became 1 Sqn of 24 Sig Regt, both he and Major Rae were posted elsewhere and I lost touch, although I believe he took a commission later in his career.
