MURRAY, Don

Don, self-styled King of Fife, a proud Scot and my good friend, died suddenly a few days before his 80th birthday.

We served together in Cyprus and Germany in the 1960s and 70s and spent recent months remembering the good times we had then.

Don, you will be missed by family and friends. RIP.

Peter transferred from the TA infantry into 68 (Inns of Court and City Yeomanry) Signal Sqn which was part of 71 (Yeomanry) Signal Regiment in 1980. He was promoted to WO2 and became the military training officer (QMSI) of the Regiment. He was commissioned as a TA LE Officer in 1990 with the rank of Captain. He served in 68 Sqn until 1996 and was promoted to Major.

During that time his civilian job was in the F&CO and while there he persuaded them and the MoD to deploy 68 Sqn for annual camp to the West Indies to trial an inter-island comms system to be used for counter narcotics operations.

He retired in 2004, and his last years of service 1998 - 2000 were spent on the staff at HQ RSignals.

WEBB, Ernie

It is with deep regret that I must announce the death of Lt Col (QM) Ernie Webb aged 93 who passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a short illness on 1st July 2022.

Our thoughts are with his wife Marcia and their children, Susan, Michael, and Christopher at this sad time.

Ernie was born into a military family in Murree, India in 1929. His father, a Captain in the Indian Army Ordnance Corps, became a POW after the Fall of Singapore and died in September 1943 under forced labour on the infamous Death Railway.

After the death of his father, Ernie was taken under the wing of close family friend "Uncle Mac" and at the end of hostilities, with Uncle Mac's advice and influence, Ernie finished his schooling in India and travelled to the UK to join the Corps at the wish of his late father.

Based on many long chats with him on exercise and while serving together he told me once that, on arrival in Southampton to set foot in England for the very first time, he was overwhelmed and disappointed by the contrast between the greenery of India and industrial England.

Ernie went on to serve tours in Singapore, West Africa, Germany, and Northern Ireland, only missing out on being sent to the Korean War because his unit refused to release him from a hockey tournament! Many in the Corps will remember Ernie as an outstanding Signaller, RSM, Quartermaster and athlete. His skills with the racquet obtained while growing up in India led him to be an ambassador for Corps sport, in particular representing hockey and squash for the Regiment, Corps and Army.

I had the privilege of serving with Ernie in BAOR and later when he was Quartermaster at 33rd Signal Regiment (V) and at the Royal School of Signals. His contribution as Quartermaster during the acceptance trials and fielding of the Ptarmigan communication system, particularly in determining the size of the transport fleet and Equipment Table, ensured a smooth acceptance as the primary 1(BR) Corps area telecommunications system.

After leaving the Corps in 1984 he spent 6 years as a Quartermaster with the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces (Signals), finally demobbing fully to enjoy his retirement with family, playing golf and coaching squash.

He was an active member, along with many other boys of a similar lineage, of the Gallowgate Camp Ex-boys' Association and Ernie took part in the final march past in 2017 at Blandford Camp for the laying up of their standard, one of only 12 ex-boys on that final parade.

Many will fondly remember Ernie for the high standards he set for himself and others, his friendly disposition, and above all his loyalty and devotion to his family and duty, setting an example for all those whom he came into contact with.

Rest in Peace old friend, duties done.

GRAY-COWAN, Stuart

24030138 Stuart Gray-Cowan enlisted in the Royal Corps of Signals in Huddersfield in October 1964 and, following training at Catterick as a Cypher Operator, he was posted to the field Army in 1965. He served in Masirah, Singapore, Germany, Blandford, Aldershot, Canada, Shetland and York.

In 1996 he was appointed as the Regimental Sergeant Major at HQ 3 ADSR in Soest. He was subsequently commissioned from there as a Late Entry Officer and promoted to Captain. His final tour of duty was as a Squadron Second-in-Command in York with 2 Signal Regiment.

Following his military service, Stuart worked as a Retired Officer, RO2, with the Headquarters 15 Brigade in Imphal Barracks, York until he finally retired from his working life in 2012.

He was a keen rugby player throughout his life, and an equally keen supporter of Army rugby and the RFU administration following the end of his playing days. He devoted his spare time to the training and assessment of rugby referees for a number of years, continuing this into his retirement right up to his demise.

Stuart suffered a heart attack during a shopping trip to York, with his partner, Sue, on 27th July 2022 and, despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he could not be saved.

WATSON, Walter Arthur (Wally)

2379492 Cpl Walter ('Wally') Arthur Watson died on 4 June 2022, 5 weeks short of his century.

Dad served from 1941 to 1947 and was attached to 12 Ack Ack Brigade of Monty's 8th Army (apologies if I have got the terminology wrong). After his training at Prestatyn he embarked from Gladstone Dock in Liverpool and went via Durban (seeing and hearing the famous 'Lady in White') through the Red Sea and into Egypt. In his words he then spent 2 or 3 years wandering seemingly aimlessly backwards and forwards across North Africa before the invasion of Italy. He landed, I think, at Salerno and worked his way up through Italy until he got to Venice when the war ended.

He was a good old boy, loved and will be missed by me, his 3 grandsons and 4 great grandchildren.

WAUGH, Michael Eugene

Mike (Woofy) Waugh was my best mate when we were stationed in York Barracks, Muenster W. Germany with 4 Gds Armoured Brigade & Signal Sqn. We were in TM (Technical Maintenance) Troop from 1971 to 1974 when Woofy was sent on a course to Catterick Camp.

He was from Manchester and was killed on the coach by the IRA after visiting his parents. I went to his funeral but later lost touch with his family and girlfriend (a German girl) Wibke (Vicky) Farber.

Being 71 and a half now my memory is not what it was but I still think of Woofy very often. I hope this fills in a few details about one of the victims of the M62 coach bomb.

It is with great sadness that I report the death of Bill Wilson on 15th February 2022 after a prolonged illness. A great guy, proud Scotsman and an avid Rangers fan.
